Sun Dogs

I have often seen sun dogs - those pairs of rainbow-colored sprays on opposite sides of the sun.  Yesterday I saw something new - sun dogs joined by a faint rainbow over the sun.  It must be a phenomenon of cold weather.  It was hovering around -30C at 3:00 yesterday afternoon, bright, clear and cold.  I went to the playground across the street to get an unobstructed view of the rainbow - the 'dogs' themselves were fading away.

Here's hoping your day is bright and sunny.

That is an eerie sight. I've seen rings around the moon, but not a half ring around the sun. Sun dogs--my mom used to love seeing them. They are harbingers of storms or something. I know she was excited to see one.

Brrr that must have been a bit chilly. I've never heard of or seen sun dogs - maybe we don't get cold enough weather for them. It does look quite striking though.

That translates to about -22F here. I think? I'm shivering just thinking about it. That is WAY too cold for either of us. I have, to the best of my knowledge, NEVER heard of or seen SUN DOGS. Sounds like it's pretty neat phenomenom. Great pic.

It is a beautiful picture. I'd never gone out in such cold though to capture it. Glad you are more adventuresome. They say we'll be seeing 12 degrees F. here tomorrow night. That is about the coldest we've seen so far this winter. Hopefully it won't be much colder than that for us. Take care and keep warm

For those who thought yesterdays temps were cold, this mornings were outrageous -43 windchill!
I saw the sun looking like this but not the rainbow. I didn't think to take a picture. Wish I had. Yours is beautiful. Maybe a srapbooking page in the making!

Super photo! We had a little bit of snow this morning, but it's gone now. The temperatures are generally staying above freezing, which suits me fine!
