Jenn and Emily had run this race last year. When Sam saw his mother cross the finish line at that time, he decided he wanted to do it this year. So all year the two of them ran together, building their stamina and increasing their speed. Emily has run several races during the year and was almost sidelined from this one by a knee injury, but she recovered in time to join her sister and nephew tonight.
Emily, Jenny and Sam at the end of the race |
Sam - first of our bunch to cross the finish line - his first official race. |
Jenny - second across the line, looking for Sam. |
Early on in the race, Jenn noticed one of her shoe laces was untied so she stopped to tie it. Sam kept on running. From then on he was out of Jenn's sight and she worried about him for the rest of the race. In the picture above, she's looking around for him as soon as she crossed the finish line.
FOUND! |
And it was a very emotional moment when she found him. He crossed the line about two minutes before his Mom and was waiting for her to show up.
And then Emily came, close on Jenny's heels, looking great, to be greeted by her Dad. The three of them came across the line within three minutes of one another. A great race.

I'm always in awe of people who can do this. I couldn't run to save my life. Bicycle maybe, but not running. Congrats to everyone.
Why do we get such a sinking feeling when our children are out of sight? Sam appears to be a strong young adult and this is just the beginning of him getting ahead of his mom in a lot of races. Oh how I know that feeling. Victory for all three in simply finishing the race. Congrats!
Great photos. They all look awesome! Em didn't run it with us last year, though. I think it's her first official race! I'm so glad they had some fans them to cheer them across the finish line! I love those people!

Aw, thanks Mum. It was Sam whose shoe lace was untied and I kept running, thinking I'd notice when he passed me (he always passes me). But there were too many people and I didn't see him go by. I was afraid he was behind me the whole time. Not so!
Awe such an achievement! Most I ever did was walk the 5 km charity runs in my day! You must be very proud of your active family!
An awesome accomplishment for all three. You should all be proud. Glad mother and son were reunited. My brother runs marathons, so I know how grueling it is. A good celebration was called for. Glad you enjoyed yourselves. Take care.
What a wonderful family memory! And a good tradition to get started. Wish I could get that motivated.
PS: Bunco is a dice game played mostly by women these days, but I guess in its heyday it involved lots of illegal gambling and so "bunco" squads were formed to fight the vice.
Another great acheivement for the runners!!
