Arizona Road Trip - Part 3 - Petrified Forest

The Petrified Forest National Park was not at all like I had imagined - there wasn't a tree in sight! Just miles and miles of desert.  Studded throughout the park though were the remains of an ancient forest - fallen and broken trees that had been transformed to quartz ridden petrified wood.

A large petrified log with a smaller broken off piece

Here is what the guidebook says about it.

"...The trees fell, and swollen streams washed them into adjacent floodplains.  a mix of silt, mud and volcanic ash buried the logs. This sediment cut off oxygen and slowed the logs' decay.  Silica-laden groundwater seeped through the logs and replaced the original wood tissues with silica deposits.  Eventually the silica crystallized into quartz, and the logs were preserved as petrified wood.  Over the 225 million years since the trees lived, the continents moved to their present positions, and this region was uplifted.  As a result the climate changed and the tropical environment became today's grassland.  Over time, wind and water wore away the rock layers and exposed fossilized ancient plants and animals.  The hills will yield more fossils as weathering sculpts the Painted Desert's soft sedimentary rock."  National Park Service. U.S. Department of the Interior

It is against the law to collect even the smallest piece of petrified wood from the park to maintain the integrity of the park.  However, there is some to be found outside the park boundries and enterprising residents collect and sell pieces outside of the park itself.

The petrified wood is just one aspect of the Petrified Forest National Park.  Next time I'll post pictures of the Painted Desert portion - a beautiful park for exploring and learning about the prehistoric past.

I have some PETRIFIED WOOD from my grandpa. It's from someplace in California. Always has fascinated me. ARIZONA is full of interesting places to visit and see. Such a shame my daughter who is out there is not able to explore all these hidden treasures. ENJOY your adventures. PS) I LOVE your hat. I wear them too.

Very interesting Pat! Didn't know anything about this area and now I know a little! I like your hat too Not used to you wearing one. Such interesting photos!

Tery and Mickey - I had to wear the hat - it was so hot and bright out. I ended up with a bad case of hat head, but who cares! Lloyd's hat is shading his burned forehead and nose that he got when he fell asleep by the pool a few days ago. Going through tons of Noxzema and peeling like crazy.

I love this area, but it looks just the same as it did four years ago when I visited. I guess when it takes millions of years to change things, I shouldn't expect much to be different. :)

Do you know that I live here and have never been? Looks like a great place. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the information. I remember going to the Petrified Forrest when I was a child but had no idea what I was seeing or how it came about. Now I have a completed childhood memory.

Yes, if we went there now we would be mistaken for some of the fossils:)

Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards definitely have the oddest divorce item by arguing over sperm in public. The two bashed it out as fans watched both point Cheap Nike Shoes fingers, but when Charlie Sheen alleged Denise Richards wanted sperm for another child during the divorce, fans got the impression that perhaps the courts should figure this nightmare out.
At first Cheap Nike Shoes I was excited to read some juicy gossip, but then I wondered if this is just another attack Nike NZ on a celebrity mom, well, because she is a celebrity (wife). I guess the hot issues are that she met Jerry Seinfeld at the Reebok Gym in Manhattan while she was still married, she is a accused of plagiarizing another writer's recipes for her children's cookbook "Deceptively Delicious" and gave Oprah Winfrey 21 pairs of Christian Louboutin shoes as a gift for inviting her on the show to discuss her cookbook. A blogger at the Huffington Post even calculated the cost of the shoes to be $16,000 - $20,000.
Pants are also required on the course for gentlemen. Your pants should have pockets. This may sound elementary, but many a golfer has left the store mad because they don have pockets. You need pockets for your score card, tees, wallet, and what ever else you choose to bring. Be sure to purchase pants Cheap Nike Nike Shoes NZ Shoes that are light weight and made of a material that Nike NZ won irate you in the sun. For example pick light weight cotton versus a wool pant. Pants also should be a comfortable fit.
The Nike dunk is Cheap Nike Shoes instantly offered at the well known footwear store all around the world. The price of Nike soak is rather acceptable as well as sensible. The typical price of a set of this extremely elegant brand name amounts through $65 in order to $99 just. The online publicity of Nike dunks makes it popular and for that reason which the actual demand from customers has increased globally. Hence the cost increases and varies from store to keep.
Tip #4 Light Weight shoes help you jump higher. Pick a Basketball shoe that is very light weight so you can jump higher. The lighter the shoe, the higher you can jump. And if jumping is one of the things you do most when playing basketball then this is something you really need to consider.
Morrow likes to play the net with his body, but that has come at a price. In the coveted 1999-2000 Stanley Cup Playoffs, he played through with a broken bone in his ankle. In the 2006-07 season, he missed 33 games after suffering severed tendons in his wrist. In the 2008-09 season, Morrow's ACL tear allowed him to play only 18 games.

The show strands by sixteen to twenty strangers within a remote tropical location split into two to four teams called tribes.According to the show's coordinator, jeff probst, while it is preferential to use sixteen contestants to ensure it is easier to distribute genders across tribes also to give the viewers fewer contestants to remember, at times there happen to be eighteen-And twenty-Player seasons allowing for"Wiggle room"In case players quit or are removed as a result of injury. [2]Depending on the season, tribes are given a minor number of tools having which to survive. These tools have incorporated a machete, a pot, and water canteens to hold on to water from sources that vary each season.Tribes are encouraged to make shelters to protect themselves in the elements and to forage on the local plant life and animals for nourishment. In some seasons, tribes have started along with food supplies(Typically rice)Provided by the show, while in other seasons tribes happen to be given no additional help in the beginning of the game.Earlier seasons allowed players to transport one luxury item using them.Several seasons have brought the players into your game without preparation, making them start with only the clothes on their backs along with whatever tools are supplied. In this case players may also be given their running shoes and boots for safety reasons.
